Formula

How Is Facebook Ad Cost Calculated?

Facebook ad cost is calculated by multiplying the number of sales you need by the cost of acquiring a single sale. First, your revenue goal is divided by your average order value to find the number of sales required; then your CPM, click-through rate and conversion rate are used to work out what each sale will cost you.

The calculation follows these steps:

  1. 01Sales needed = Monthly revenue goal ÷ Average order value (AOV)
  2. 02Cost per click (CPC) = CPM ÷ (1,000 × CTR)
  3. 03Clicks needed = Sales needed ÷ Conversion rate
  4. 04Cost per acquisition (CPA) = CPC ÷ Conversion rate
  5. 05Total ad budget = Sales needed × CPA

Calculating Your Facebook Ads Budget by Revenue

Calculating by revenue shows how much you need to spend to reach a specific sales target. The example below is for an e-commerce business with a monthly revenue goal of $20,000.

If your monthly revenue goal is $20,000 and your average order value is $100, you need 200 sales a month to reach your goal. With a CPM of $10 and a click-through rate of 1.5%, your cost per click comes to about $0.67.

With a conversion rate of 2%, you need about 10,000 clicks to get 200 sales. That means each sale costs you about $33. Your total monthly ad budget comes to about $6,667, or about $222 per day over 30 days. If this budget brings in $20,000 in revenue, your ROAS is 3.0.

These figures are examples. Your results will change when you use your own account's CPM, CTR and conversion rate.

Calculating Your Facebook Ads Budget by Profit

Calculating by profit targets what you actually keep instead of revenue. It factors in the margin left after product costs, shipping and other expenses. This shows whether your ads are losing money even when they bring in revenue, and how many sales and how much budget you need to hit your profit goal.

ROAS

What Is Break-Even ROAS and How Is It Calculated?

Break-even ROAS is the ROAS at which your ad spend neither makes nor loses money, and it is calculated by dividing 1 by your profit margin. For example, if your profit margin is 40%, your break-even ROAS is 1 ÷ 0.40 = 2.5. In that case, any campaign that earns less than $2.50 in revenue for every $1 of ad budget is losing money.

The lower your profit margin, the higher your break-even ROAS. A business with a 20% margin has a break-even ROAS of 5.0, while this drops to 3.3 at a 30% margin, 2.0 at a 50% margin and 1.7 at a 60% margin. In other words, a business running on thin margins needs a much higher ROAS from its ads to turn a profit.

Knowing your break-even ROAS lets you judge your campaigns by profitability, not by ROAS alone.

Metrics

Which Metrics Are Used in the Calculation?

A Facebook ads budget calculator uses seven core metrics. You can find them in Meta Ads Manager and your e-commerce dashboard.

Monthly Revenue Goal

The total revenue you want to generate from your ads in a month. It is the starting point of the calculation and determines how many sales you need.

Average Order Value (AOV)

How much a customer spends on average in a single order. It is calculated by dividing total revenue by the number of orders. The higher your AOV, the fewer sales you need to reach the same revenue goal.

Cost per 1,000 Impressions (CPM)

The average amount you pay for your ad to be shown 1,000 times. CPM varies with audience size, competition, season and ad placement.

Click-Through Rate (CTR)

The percentage of people who click on your ad after seeing it. It shows how much interest your creative and message generate. The higher your CTR, the lower your cost per click.

Cost per Click (CPC)

The average amount you pay for a single click. The calculator works it out automatically from your CPM and CTR.

Conversion Rate

The percentage of visitors who click your ad and then make a purchase. Site speed, product pages, pricing and checkout steps all directly affect your conversion rate.

Cost per Acquisition (CPA)

The average ad spend needed to generate one sale. When you compare your CPA with your average order value and profit margin, you can see whether a campaign is profitable.

Budget Allocation

Allocate Your Budget Wisely

The calculator splits your total budget across the three stages of the sales funnel, so you can win new customers, convert people who visit your site and keep your existing customers.

70%

New Customer Budget

Reach new audiences who don't know your brand yet and fill the top of your funnel.

25%

Retargeting Budget

Re-engage visitors who came to your site but didn't buy, people who added to cart and those who interacted, and turn them into sales.

5%

Existing Customer Budget

Encourage existing customers to buy again and increase revenue per customer.

These percentages are a starting point. If you are a new brand, you can increase the share of the new customer budget; if your site already gets high traffic, you can raise the retargeting share.

Factors

What Factors Affect Facebook Ad Cost?

Facebook ad cost is not fixed; different businesses can get very different results from the same budget. The factors that affect cost the most are:

  • 01

Audience: CPM rises in narrow, highly competitive audiences.

  • 02

Season and timing: Costs go up during busy periods such as Black Friday and the holidays, when more advertisers compete.

  • 03

Creative quality: Creatives that don't grab attention, or that have run too long and fatigued, lower your click-through rate and raise costs.

  • 04

Campaign objective: Sales campaigns run at a different cost than traffic or engagement campaigns.

  • 05

Conversion tracking: When Meta Pixel and Conversions API aren't set up correctly, the algorithm struggles to find the right audience.

  • 06

Website experience: Slow pages or a poor mobile experience lower your conversion rate and raise your cost per acquisition.
